26 Nov My best (and most unexpected) work
If you had told me five years ago that I would be running a women’s business retreat, I would have probably laughed!
In a professional environment, I had always been more comfortable around men than women. I earned my stripes working in traditionally male-dominated industries, and up until a few years ago, I really believed that there wasn’t a difference between being a man and a woman in business. (In fact, if I’m really honest, I was really pretty dismissive about it. I thought that women should just get on with it!)
But then a woman came up to me after I spoke at an event and opened my eyes. She told me that she loved my energy, authenticity and advice, but just when I was feeling pretty good about my talk, she gave it to me — she told me that my view that there was no difference being a woman in business was arrogant, and only based in my own experience and personality, not that of all women. She stopped me in my tracks.
She was absolutely right.
What she said stuck with me and radically changed my view of what it’s like to be a woman in business. I realised that I may not have been held back, in fact many of my supporters, mentors and cheerleaders have been men, but that didn’t mean it was the same experience for all women. I also realised and this time in my own life too, that once women have children, no matter how supportive the husband or partner, the woman almost always has more responsibility for the family’s welfare. The more I saw the unique challenges that women face as entrepreneurs, the more I realised that the kind of support needed by women in business just didn’t exist.
So I created The One Retreat: an all women business retreat for women just like you and me — women who juggle a thousand tasks a day, women who don’t want to leave anything undone, women who are ambitious and strong, but often end up running themselves into the ground because they don’t have the support network they need.
Let me be clear, I’m still all about #HustleAndServe and getting results, but I’ve realised we can do this better, together.
What I know for sure, is having a group of women who know the ins and outs of what you have to deal with every day, the challenges you face, and the dreams you’re turning into reality is absolutely critical to being able to hustle and serve like you want to.
I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved at The One Retreat and I say ‘we’ because I absolutely couldn’t have achieved this by myself. The community is rich, diverse, supportive, energised, collaborative and real. The ventures and friendships that have been created from it warm my heart and feed my soul. I am eternally grateful to all the women, past and present who show up fully, give so freely and are ready to truly be all they can be.
I am so proud that almost all of the places at every retreat are filled by women who have been recommended by other women. The only advertising we every do is a mail out or two to remind people of the dates. There are only 3 places left for this coming January’s One Retreat (22-24) — so if you know that one of them is for you and you’re ready to join this sisterhood, then click right here to learn more and reserve your spot.
Can’t wait to see you there!
