Can You Really Do It All?

In short, no.

It’s just not possible. At least not all at the same time.

We’re simply trying to do too much: run a business, prioritise the people we love, read, see our friends, write more, learn new skills, blog more, watch Netflix (yes, this counts), have some ‘me’ time, run more, make sure we have at least one green smoothie a day (ok, that might just be me), clean the house, get organised, listen to more audio books, write that book, launch a new product, get into meditation, create our online course, go to the dentist…

Stop.

If we don’t get a grip on our incessant ‘To Do Lists’ we will drive ourselves crazy. Literally.

We can’t be all things, to all people, all the time. In the same way, we can’t do everything at the same time.

Here’s 4 little tips to stop the overwhelm.

  1. Choose what to focus on in the moment. If you’re in the middle of an important project like launching a new course, focus on it. Put time aside to do nothing else. The less distractions you have, the more you get done. Compartmentalise your work; switch off the phone, email and ALL social media.
  1. Learn to say No. Often. This is actually my number 1 tip because once you learn to do this, everything changes. Start saying ‘no’ to the things you don’t want to do, so you have more time for the things you do want to do. It’s really that simple. Of course, we all have things that we have to do that we don’t want to do to a degree; we have responsibilities, that’s life. However, I can pretty much guarantee each of us also says ‘yes’ to things that we don’t want to do and don’t need to do—whether out of guilt, habit or a fear of rejection.
  1. Ask for help. It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for help, it’s a sign of strength. Need help at home? Ask your partner or your kids to do their bit. Even if it’s just loading the dishwasher! Need help with your business? Reach out and ask. Don’t know where to start? 1. Go easy on yourself. You’re not Super Human. You’re not supposed to do it all. Want to exercise, but don’t have enough time to get to the gym? Don’t beat yourself up, do a workout at home or go for a 30 minute run instead. Do what you can, when you can. Something is always better than nothing.
